  69.  As of this writing there are no erros or such to handle here. You can 
  70.  use the Windows SETUP on the diskettes or CD to install the program as 
  71.  documented. 
  72.  
  73.  
  74.  III. SETUP DETAILS 
  75.  
  76.  The SETUP program is intended to provide nearly automatic installation 
  77.  of the DOOM II Screen Saver. However, you are given certain options, and 
  78.  some questions might arise about what the program is doing. This section 
  79.  will address these additional details. If you are having problems 
  80.  getting the SETUP program to execute on your computer refer to the 
  81.  TROUBLESHOOTING section below, and re-read the User's Manual before 
  82.  calling for help.

  84.  
  85.       A.   Configuration check 
  86.  
  87.  SETUP can offer you some information about your system configuration. 
  88.  While loading it checks your video card and video mode, your CPU, the 
  89.  number of colors you can display, and the amount of free memory. It will 
  90.  alert you if any of these seems to be a possible cause of concern. If 
  91.  you appear to be running an invalid operating system the program will 
  92.  alert you and abort. 
  93.  
  94.  
  95.       B.   Welcome 
  96.  
  97.  This dialog box shows that you have passed the initial configuration 
  98.  checks and may proceed to perform the installation. 
  99.  
  100.  If you have any screen saver installed and active (even another EnterAct 
  101.  module) you will need to close it before SETUP can complete. Select Exit 
  102.  to leave SETUP, fully terminate all screen savers, then run SETUP again. 
  103.  
  104.  You can select Install to begin transferring this program from the 
  105.  installation CD or diskettes onto your hard disk drive. 
  106.  
  107.  If for some reason you wish to remove this already installed screen 
  108.  saver from your computer select Uninstall. See UNINSTALLING below for 
  109.  additional details.

  111.  
  112.       C.   Sound files 
  113.  
  114.  SETUP will ask if you wish to install the sound effects files and 
  115.  capability of the saver. If you answer YES the sound files will be 
  116.  installed, otherwise the disk space will be saved by not loading the 
  117.  unused files. If you disable sound but wish to add it later simply 
  118.  execute this SETUP again.

  129.       D.   Check for existing EnterAct Screen Savers 
  130.  
  131.  SETUP will look for an existing ENTERACT.INI file to determine if you 
  132.  already have another EnterAct screen saver product installed. The 
  133.  EnterAct system is designed to support multiple products. For the 
  134.  control program to function normally all new products should be 
  135.  installed in the same disk path as the existing products. 
  136.  
  137.  If an existing EnterAct saver is located then SETUP will set the default 
  138.  installation path to match the present system. We suggest that you not 
  139.  change this path setting to ensure full access to all your saver 
  140.  modules. 
  141.  
  142.  
  143.       E.   DOOM II Saver Custom Installation Controls 
  144.  
  145.  SETUP will suggest a location on your hard disk where its files can be 
  146.  installed. If possible allow it to use this default. If you wish to 
  147.  change where the files are placed select the Set Location button. To 
  148.  avoid non-productive use of network capabilities it is suggested that 
  149.  you not install any saver to a remote networked disk drive. 
  150.  
  151.  You can select: Set Location, Configure, Install, Help, or Exit. 
  152.  
  153.  The drive that will receive the installed files must have sufficient 
  154.  free space. This dialog displays the SPACE REQUIRED and the SPACE 
  155.  AVAILABLE for the Installation Drive. You can use the Configure control 
  156.  to adjust now much disk space the screen saver will require. If 
  157.  insufficient space exists on the currently selected disk please use the 
  158.  Set Location button to specify another disk. 
  159.  
  160.  Regardless of where the files are installed some space is also needed in 
  161.  your Windows directory. Thus the SPACE REQUIRED and the SPACE AVAILABLE 
  162.  for the drive that is the home of your Windows system are also 
  163.  displayed. If insufficient space exists on your Windows drive you will 
  164.  have to exit SETUP, free some disk space on the Windows drive, and begin 
  165.  the SETUP program again. 
  166.  
  167.  
  168.            1.   Installation Location 
  169.  
  170.  If you select the Set Location button then this dialog is presented. 
  171.  This allows you to specify exactly the disk and path where you wish to 
  172.  install the saver files. Be certain to provide both disk and path 
  173.  information. To accept your change select OK, otherwise select Cancel. 
  174.  
  175.  
  176.            2.   Screen Saver Image Configuration 
  177.  
  178.  If you select the Configure button then this dialog is presented. The 
  179.  IMAGE file for this saver contains all the animations, creatures, and 
  180.  objects that will be displayed when the screen saver is running. This 
  181.  file can be stored on your disk in uncompressed form for fastest saver 
  182.  loading and performance. However, the file does require almost 10 Meg of 
  183.  disk space. If you select the Use Compressed option then the file will 
  184.  be less than 3 Meg in size, but saver loading will be slower. The 
  185.

  191.  resulting speed of the compressed file is highly dependent on the 
  192.  capabilities of your computer. Make your choice and select Ok.

  195.            3.   Custom Installation Help 
  196.  
  197.  If you select the Help button then this dialog is presented. This 
  198.  explains each of the displays in the Custom Installation Controls 
  199.  dialog.

  202.            4.   Install 
  203.  
  204.  When you have specified the desired installation location, and 
  205.  sufficient disk space exists for all the needed files, then select the 
  206.  Install button to begin the process. 
  207.  
  208.  
  209.       F.   After Dark 
  210.  
  211.  SETUP will attempt to determine if you have a properly installed copy of 
  212.  After Dark 3.0 on your system. 
  213.  
  214.  If your After Dark installation seems incomplete (perhaps you've tried 
  215.  to remove it from your system), or if it is the wrong version, then 
  216.  SETUP will proceed as if After Dark were not installed. If you believe 
  217.  that After Dark 3.0 is properly installed but SETUP disagrees, then you 
  218.  can try to work around this situation, refer to the After Dark Manual 
  219.  Installation section below. 
  220.  
  221.  If After Dark 3.0 is present, and all appears well, SETUP will ask if 
  222.  you wish to have the DOOM II Saver added as an After Dark module. You 
  223.  can have only one screen saver system active in your computer at one 
  224.  time. If you actually use After Dark as your screen saver then answer 
  225.  YES to this prompt. Otherwise SETUP will proceed as if After Dark were 
  226.  not installed. 
  227.  
  228.  If you are installing the After Dark module for the DOOM II Saver then 
  229.  the After Dark program should be terminated while SETUP runs. 
  230.  
  231.  Once the DOOM II SETUP has prepared your system, and normally completed, 
  232.  After Dark should automatically rebuild its module list when it is next 
  233.  activated. 
  234.  
  235.  
  236.       G.   Decompressing files 
  237.  
  238.  The SETUP program will begin decompressing files from the installation 
  239.  diskettes (or CD) to your selected drive. When the first diskette is 
  240.  completed it will prompt for the next. Do not remove the diskettes until 
  241.  prompted to do so. When prompted change to the desired diskette, and 
  242.  then select OK. If SETUP has any problems decompressing the files try 
  243.  using another diskette drive if available. 
  244.  
  245.  If you selected Uncompressed IMAGE file usage then the compressed file 
  246.  that has been installed will be processed.

  253.       H.   New Program Group 
  254.  
  255.  After copying the desired files to your selected disk SETUP will make a 
  256.  new Program Group in your Program Manager called "EnterAct." This 
  257.  process is done by sending a DDE message from SETUP to your current 
  258.  Shell. If your current shell is not Program Manager, and does not 
  259.  support Program Manager interface, then you may need to manually 
  260.  establish the Group (EnterAct), and the Items which are (Change disk and 
  261.  path if needed):

  279.  To have the saver start in Self Directing mode automatically when 
  280.  Windows loads SETUP will establish a new Item in the StartUp group as 
  281.  follows:

  288.       I.   Sound test 
  289.  
  290.  If you have enabled the installation of sound effects the SETUP program 
  291.  will now test your Windows sound player. You should only use DOOM II 
  292.  Saver sound effects if these tests pass. Be certain that your sound 
  293.  drivers are installed, working, and that the volume is turned up. 
  294.  
  295.  The first sound will play. If it is audible select the YES button to 
  296.  proceed. The second sound will then play. If it is also audible select 
  297.  YES. 
  298.  
  299.  If you answered YES to both tests then all the DOOM II Saver Sound 
  300.  option will be enabled. 
  301.  
  302.  If you answered NO to either test then the Sound option will be 
  303.  disabled. The sound files remain installed, and can be used whenever you 
  304.  resolve your system's problem simply by changing the Option for Sound. 
  305.  Refer to the Trouble Shooting HELP file for suggestions regarding your 
  306.  sound system.

  317.  SETUP will now establish the DOOM II Saver as the active screen saver 
  318.  for your system. 
  319.  
  320.  If you installed as an After Dark module then when After Dark starts 
  321.  again it should update its module list and select EnterAct as the 
  322.  current module. After Dark controls the password, and idle time delay 
  323.  for starting the saver. 
  324.  
  325.  If you did not install as an After Dark module then EnterAct will be 
  326.  installed in Self Directing mode. A copy of the DOOM II Saver icon has 
  327.  been copied into your StartUp group. This provides automatic loading 
  328.  when Windows is initiated. We decided this approach was a little more 
  329.  "voluntary" from the user's perspective than modifying your WIN.INI file 
  330.  (as others do). 
  331.  
  332.  If for some reason you wish to use EnterAct/DOOM II as an internal 
  333.  Windows or Norton NDW screen saver you can manually make this change 
  334.  after SETUP is done. Simply disable the ACTIVE mode and Close the DOOM 
  335.  II Screen Saver main menu. Then select EnterAct in the Program 
  336.  Mangager/Control Panel/Desktop/Screen Saver Name field.

  339.       K.   Final Adjustments 
  340.  
  341.  SETUP will now adjust your EnterAct.INI file so that DOOM II is the 
  342.  primary screen saver. It will do the same for After Dark if operating 
  343.  under its control. It also disables the internal Windows/NDW screen 
  344.  saver to avoid conflicts that may crash your computer. 
  345.  
  346.  
  347.       L.   CONGRATULATIONS 
  348.  
  349.  You have gotten through the process. If you had no error messages then 
  350.  all should be well. You should then fully terminate Windows and reload 
  351.  it again. This will assure that all needed drivers and such are properly 
  352.  loaded and all files recognized. Your saver should start after the 
  353.  programmed delay time if the computer is fully idle. ENJOY.

  355.  
  356.  IV.  AFTER DARK MANUAL INSTALLATION 
  357.  
  358.  The information in this section is provided only as a reference if you 
  359.  desire to manually correct the configuration. Use of the DOOM II SETUP 
  360.  is fully automated and highly suggested. If our SETUP program says your 
  361.  After Dark installation is invalid and you use this technique to try to 
  362.  force the DOOM II Saver to work as an After Dark module we make NO 
  363.  guarantees that this process will succeed. 
  364.  
  365.  The DOOM II SETUP must complete normally, installing the DOOM II Saver 
  366.  files before the remainder of these steps are tried. 
  367.  
  368.  The DOOM II SETUP program will make a duplicate copy of the After Dark 
  369.  interface file. The first step is to copy this file into a new 
  370.  subdirectory called ENTERACT under your root After Dark directory. This 
  371.

  377.  is an example of the DOS commands that would make the new subdirectory 
  378.  and copy the file (change DISK and PATH as needed for your system):

  381.       XCOPY  C:\ENTERACT\ENTERACT.AD  C:\AFTERDRK\ENTERACT\*.*

  383.  When the DOOM II Saver is first installed After Dark must become aware 
  384.  of the new module in order to use it. If your After Dark's Advanced 
  385.  Options have the Update Module List at Startup selection enabled then 
  386.  ENTERACT Saver should be recognized automatically. 
  387.  
  388.  To manually introduce the EnterAct Saver module to After Dark follow 
  389.  this procedure: 
  390.  
  391.       Open the After Dark icon to reveal the main control panel. 
  392.  
  393.       At the top right of the panel, under the On/Off switch, is the main 
  394.       SETUP button. Select it to open the General menu. 
  395.  
  396.       Along the left side of this panel is the Advanced Options icon. 
  397.       Select it to open the Advanced Options menu. 
  398.  
  399.       Select the Update Module List button. The program will silently 
  400.       scan for modules, and should find the ENTERACT entry if you 
  401.       properly copied the file as shown above. 
  402.  
  403.       Select Ok to return to the main control panel. 
  404.  
  405.       Under the After Dark logo is a text window that shows the currently 
  406.       active saver module. Select the arrow on this window and a list of 
  407.       all available modules should be displayed. ENTERACT should now be 
  408.       included in this list. Select it, and the saver should operate 
  409.       normally.

  411.  
  412.  V.   UNINSTALLING 
  413.  
  414.  Run the SETUP program from the original diskettes or CD, Select the 
  415.  Uninstall option to remove this specific screen saver. The removal 
  416.  should be mostly automatic if no problems are encountered. 
  417.  
  418.  The SETUP for each EnterAct product is capable of uninstalling its 
  419.  particular saver. If you are uninstalling the last valid EnterAct 
  420.  product on your system then the entire EnterAct saver system will also 
  421.  be removed. 
  422.

  424.       A.   Getting automatic Uninstall to run 
  425.  
  426.  The Uninstall process will look for ENTERACT.INI in your Windows 
  427.  directory. This is needed to identify where the saver files can be 
  428.  located. If this file is missing or corrupted you can manually create a 
  429.  sufficient replacement to allow Uninstall to function. Use NOTEPAD to 
  430.  create ENTERACT.INI in your Windows directory. Put the following 
  431.  information in the file:

  441.  If your saver is not located in C:\ENTERACT then change that part of the 
  442.  entry appropriately. Save this file, run SETUP, and select Uninstall.

  444.  If you are removing a corrupted package you may receive numerous 
  445.  warnings from the Uninstall process. Except for a missing ENTERACT.INI 
  446.  file, these errors are not necessarily important. 
  447.  
  448.  
  449.       B.   What the Uninstall program does 
  450.  
  451.  Uninstall will attempt to remove all files that are specific to this 
  452.  screen saver product. If more than one EnterAct product is detected only 
  453.  DOOM II will be removed by the DOOM II SETUP program. Use the SETUP 
  454.  program for each product to remove it from your computer. If you 
  455.  Uninstall the last valid EnterAct product on your computer then the 
  456.  whole EnterAct file structure is removed.

  458.  These are the approximate manual commands performed by Uninstall. The 
  459.  disk drive and file paths shown must be replaced with the correct 
  460.  information for you system. That is determined from the ENTERACT.INI 
  461.  file.

  504.  VI.  TROUBLESHOOTING 
  505.

  508.  Once the SETUP has completed there will be a TROUBLE SHOOTING HELP file 
  509.  in the EnterAct program group. Activate that file for detailed help with 
  510.  various aspects of the program. 
  511.  
  512.  
  513.       A.   Problems running SETUP program. 
  514.  
  515.  It is best to exit all other applications before starting any SETUP 
  516.  installation. If you have a CLOCK program running this may cause some 
  517.  conflicts with SETUP. If so, exit and restart Windows, then terminate 
  518.  your CLOCK, then run SETUP again. 
  519.  
  520.  The SETUP program itself has certain system requirements: Microsoft 
  521.  Windows 3.1 in standard or enhanced mode, or Windows-NT, 500K of free 
  522.  hard-disk space at startup, VGA or better video system. The DOOM II 
  523.  Saver itself will require additional disk space once the SETUP 
  524.  installation process begins. 
  525.  
  526.  If SETUP will not execute after meeting the above requirements then 
  527.  review your System Resources. You may need to adjust your Virtual Memory 
  528.  or other resources. See the Microsoft Window's User's Guide for 
  529.  additional details on resource management.
