I. IMPORTANT REMINDER
Hang on to those installation diskettes. You should also make back-ups
of the diskettes for safe keeping, but please do not give any copies to
other people.
The DOOM II Screen Saver README.TXT Page 1
II. CORRECTIONS, ERRORS, AND LIKE EVENTS
As of this writing there are no erros or such to handle here. You can
use the Windows SETUP on the diskettes or CD to install the program as
documented.
III. SETUP DETAILS
The SETUP program is intended to provide nearly automatic installation
of the DOOM II Screen Saver. However, you are given certain options, and
some questions might arise about what the program is doing. This section
will address these additional details. If you are having problems
getting the SETUP program to execute on your computer refer to the
TROUBLESHOOTING section below, and re-read the User's Manual before
calling for help.
A. Configuration check
SETUP can offer you some information about your system configuration.
While loading it checks your video card and video mode, your CPU, the
number of colors you can display, and the amount of free memory. It will
alert you if any of these seems to be a possible cause of concern. If
you appear to be running an invalid operating system the program will
alert you and abort.
B. Welcome
This dialog box shows that you have passed the initial configuration
checks and may proceed to perform the installation.
If you have any screen saver installed and active (even another EnterAct
module) you will need to close it before SETUP can complete. Select Exit
to leave SETUP, fully terminate all screen savers, then run SETUP again.
You can select Install to begin transferring this program from the
installation CD or diskettes onto your hard disk drive.
If for some reason you wish to remove this already installed screen
saver from your computer select Uninstall. See UNINSTALLING below for
additional details.
C. Sound files
SETUP will ask if you wish to install the sound effects files and
capability of the saver. If you answer YES the sound files will be
installed, otherwise the disk space will be saved by not loading the
unused files. If you disable sound but wish to add it later simply
execute this SETUP again.
The DOOM II Screen Saver README.TXT Page 2
D. Check for existing EnterAct Screen Savers
SETUP will look for an existing ENTERACT.INI file to determine if you
already have another EnterAct screen saver product installed. The
EnterAct system is designed to support multiple products. For the
control program to function normally all new products should be
installed in the same disk path as the existing products.
If an existing EnterAct saver is located then SETUP will set the default
installation path to match the present system. We suggest that you not
change this path setting to ensure full access to all your saver
modules.
E. DOOM II Saver Custom Installation Controls
SETUP will suggest a location on your hard disk where its files can be
installed. If possible allow it to use this default. If you wish to
change where the files are placed select the Set Location button. To
avoid non-productive use of network capabilities it is suggested that
you not install any saver to a remote networked disk drive.
You can select: Set Location, Configure, Install, Help, or Exit.
The drive that will receive the installed files must have sufficient
free space. This dialog displays the SPACE REQUIRED and the SPACE
AVAILABLE for the Installation Drive. You can use the Configure control
to adjust now much disk space the screen saver will require. If
insufficient space exists on the currently selected disk please use the
Set Location button to specify another disk.
Regardless of where the files are installed some space is also needed in
your Windows directory. Thus the SPACE REQUIRED and the SPACE AVAILABLE
for the drive that is the home of your Windows system are also
displayed. If insufficient space exists on your Windows drive you will
have to exit SETUP, free some disk space on the Windows drive, and begin
the SETUP program again.
1. Installation Location
If you select the Set Location button then this dialog is presented.
This allows you to specify exactly the disk and path where you wish to
install the saver files. Be certain to provide both disk and path
information. To accept your change select OK, otherwise select Cancel.
2. Screen Saver Image Configuration
If you select the Configure button then this dialog is presented. The
IMAGE file for this saver contains all the animations, creatures, and
objects that will be displayed when the screen saver is running. This
file can be stored on your disk in uncompressed form for fastest saver
loading and performance. However, the file does require almost 10 Meg of
disk space. If you select the Use Compressed option then the file will
be less than 3 Meg in size, but saver loading will be slower. The
The DOOM II Screen Saver README.TXT Page 3
resulting speed of the compressed file is highly dependent on the
capabilities of your computer. Make your choice and select Ok.
3. Custom Installation Help
If you select the Help button then this dialog is presented. This
explains each of the displays in the Custom Installation Controls
dialog.
4. Install
When you have specified the desired installation location, and
sufficient disk space exists for all the needed files, then select the
Install button to begin the process.
F. After Dark
SETUP will attempt to determine if you have a properly installed copy of
After Dark 3.0 on your system.
If your After Dark installation seems incomplete (perhaps you've tried
to remove it from your system), or if it is the wrong version, then
SETUP will proceed as if After Dark were not installed. If you believe
that After Dark 3.0 is properly installed but SETUP disagrees, then you
can try to work around this situation, refer to the After Dark Manual
Installation section below.
If After Dark 3.0 is present, and all appears well, SETUP will ask if
you wish to have the DOOM II Saver added as an After Dark module. You
can have only one screen saver system active in your computer at one
time. If you actually use After Dark as your screen saver then answer
YES to this prompt. Otherwise SETUP will proceed as if After Dark were
not installed.
If you are installing the After Dark module for the DOOM II Saver then
the After Dark program should be terminated while SETUP runs.
Once the DOOM II SETUP has prepared your system, and normally completed,
After Dark should automatically rebuild its module list when it is next
activated.
G. Decompressing files
The SETUP program will begin decompressing files from the installation
diskettes (or CD) to your selected drive. When the first diskette is
completed it will prompt for the next. Do not remove the diskettes until
prompted to do so. When prompted change to the desired diskette, and
then select OK. If SETUP has any problems decompressing the files try
using another diskette drive if available.
If you selected Uncompressed IMAGE file usage then the compressed file
that has been installed will be processed.
The DOOM II Screen Saver README.TXT Page 4
H. New Program Group
After copying the desired files to your selected disk SETUP will make a
new Program Group in your Program Manager called "EnterAct." This
process is done by sending a DDE message from SETUP to your current
Shell. If your current shell is not Program Manager, and does not
support Program Manager interface, then you may need to manually
establish the Group (EnterAct), and the Items which are (Change disk and
path if needed):
Item Name DOOM II Saver
Cmd Line C:\ENTERACT\DOOMSAVE\DOOMSAVE.EXE
Icon Path C:\ENTERACT\DOOMSAVE\DOOMSAVE.EXE
Item Name DOOM II Saver Help
Cmd Line WINHELP C:\ENTERACT\DOOMSAVE\DOOMSAVE.HLP
Item Name EnterAct Saver Help
Cmd Line WINHELP C:\ENTERACT\ENTERACT.HLP
Item Name EnterAct Trouble Shooting
Cmd Line WINHELP C:\ENTERACT\TROUBLE.HLP
Item Name DOOM II Saver Read Me
Cmd Line NOTEPAD C:\ENTERACT\DOOMSAVE\README.TXT
To have the saver start in Self Directing mode automatically when
Windows loads SETUP will establish a new Item in the StartUp group as
follows:
Item Name DOOM II Saver StartUp
Cmd Line C:\ENTERACT\DOOMSAVE\DOOMSAVE.EXE STARTUP
Icon Path C:\ENTERACT\DOOMSAVE\DOOMSAVE.EXE
I. Sound test
If you have enabled the installation of sound effects the SETUP program
will now test your Windows sound player. You should only use DOOM II
Saver sound effects if these tests pass. Be certain that your sound
drivers are installed, working, and that the volume is turned up.
The first sound will play. If it is audible select the YES button to
proceed. The second sound will then play. If it is also audible select
YES.
If you answered YES to both tests then all the DOOM II Saver Sound
option will be enabled.
If you answered NO to either test then the Sound option will be
disabled. The sound files remain installed, and can be used whenever you
resolve your system's problem simply by changing the Option for Sound.
Refer to the Trouble Shooting HELP file for suggestions regarding your
sound system.
The DOOM II Screen Saver README.TXT Page 5
J. Screen saver activation
SETUP will now establish the DOOM II Saver as the active screen saver
for your system.
If you installed as an After Dark module then when After Dark starts
again it should update its module list and select EnterAct as the
current module. After Dark controls the password, and idle time delay
for starting the saver.
If you did not install as an After Dark module then EnterAct will be
installed in Self Directing mode. A copy of the DOOM II Saver icon has
been copied into your StartUp group. This provides automatic loading
when Windows is initiated. We decided this approach was a little more
"voluntary" from the user's perspective than modifying your WIN.INI file
(as others do).
If for some reason you wish to use EnterAct/DOOM II as an internal
Windows or Norton NDW screen saver you can manually make this change
after SETUP is done. Simply disable the ACTIVE mode and Close the DOOM
II Screen Saver main menu. Then select EnterAct in the Program
Mangager/Control Panel/Desktop/Screen Saver Name field.
K. Final Adjustments
SETUP will now adjust your EnterAct.INI file so that DOOM II is the
primary screen saver. It will do the same for After Dark if operating
under its control. It also disables the internal Windows/NDW screen
saver to avoid conflicts that may crash your computer.
L. CONGRATULATIONS
You have gotten through the process. If you had no error messages then
all should be well. You should then fully terminate Windows and reload
it again. This will assure that all needed drivers and such are properly
loaded and all files recognized. Your saver should start after the
programmed delay time if the computer is fully idle. ENJOY.
IV. AFTER DARK MANUAL INSTALLATION
The information in this section is provided only as a reference if you
desire to manually correct the configuration. Use of the DOOM II SETUP
is fully automated and highly suggested. If our SETUP program says your
After Dark installation is invalid and you use this technique to try to
force the DOOM II Saver to work as an After Dark module we make NO
guarantees that this process will succeed.
The DOOM II SETUP must complete normally, installing the DOOM II Saver
files before the remainder of these steps are tried.
The DOOM II SETUP program will make a duplicate copy of the After Dark
interface file. The first step is to copy this file into a new
subdirectory called ENTERACT under your root After Dark directory. This
The DOOM II Screen Saver README.TXT Page 6
is an example of the DOS commands that would make the new subdirectory
and copy the file (change DISK and PATH as needed for your system):
MKDIR C:\AFTERDRK\ENTERACT
XCOPY C:\ENTERACT\ENTERACT.AD C:\AFTERDRK\ENTERACT\*.*
When the DOOM II Saver is first installed After Dark must become aware
of the new module in order to use it. If your After Dark's Advanced
Options have the Update Module List at Startup selection enabled then
ENTERACT Saver should be recognized automatically.
To manually introduce the EnterAct Saver module to After Dark follow
this procedure:
Open the After Dark icon to reveal the main control panel.
At the top right of the panel, under the On/Off switch, is the main
SETUP button. Select it to open the General menu.
Along the left side of this panel is the Advanced Options icon.
Select it to open the Advanced Options menu.
Select the Update Module List button. The program will silently
scan for modules, and should find the ENTERACT entry if you
properly copied the file as shown above.
Select Ok to return to the main control panel.
Under the After Dark logo is a text window that shows the currently
active saver module. Select the arrow on this window and a list of
all available modules should be displayed. ENTERACT should now be
included in this list. Select it, and the saver should operate
normally.
V. UNINSTALLING
Run the SETUP program from the original diskettes or CD, Select the
Uninstall option to remove this specific screen saver. The removal
should be mostly automatic if no problems are encountered.
The SETUP for each EnterAct product is capable of uninstalling its
particular saver. If you are uninstalling the last valid EnterAct
product on your system then the entire EnterAct saver system will also
be removed.
A. Getting automatic Uninstall to run
The Uninstall process will look for ENTERACT.INI in your Windows
directory. This is needed to identify where the saver files can be
located. If this file is missing or corrupted you can manually create a
sufficient replacement to allow Uninstall to function. Use NOTEPAD to
create ENTERACT.INI in your Windows directory. Put the following
information in the file:
[Directories]
The DOOM II Screen Saver README.TXT Page 7
StageDirectory=C:\ENTERACT
If your saver is not located in C:\ENTERACT then change that part of the
entry appropriately. Save this file, run SETUP, and select Uninstall.
If you are removing a corrupted package you may receive numerous
warnings from the Uninstall process. Except for a missing ENTERACT.INI
file, these errors are not necessarily important.
B. What the Uninstall program does
Uninstall will attempt to remove all files that are specific to this
screen saver product. If more than one EnterAct product is detected only
DOOM II will be removed by the DOOM II SETUP program. Use the SETUP
program for each product to remove it from your computer. If you
Uninstall the last valid EnterAct product on your computer then the
whole EnterAct file structure is removed.
These are the approximate manual commands performed by Uninstall. The
disk drive and file paths shown must be replaced with the correct
information for you system. That is determined from the ENTERACT.INI
file.
1. Removing DOOM II
DELTREE C:\ENTERACT\DOOMSAVE
Delete the DOOM II icons from the EnterAct program group and the StartUp
group within Windows.
2. Removing EnterAct
Delete the EnterAct icons from the EnterAct program group within
Windows.
DELTREE C:\ENTERACT
DELTREE C:\AFTERDRK\ENTERACT
ERASE C:\WINDOWS\ENTERACT.SCR
ERASE C:\WINDOWS\ENTERACT.INI
ERASE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SR_ANIM.DLL
ERASE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SR_EFFT.DLL
ERASE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SR_HOOK.DLL
ERASE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SR_SAVE.DLL
Edit SYSTEM.INI, in the 386Enh section, remove the line
DeVICE=EnterAct.386. Note that after Windows reboots the ENTERACT.386
file will no longer be used and can be manually deleted.
The DOOM II Screen Saver README.TXT Page 8
Delete the EnterAct program group from Window's Program Manager.
VI. TROUBLESHOOTING
Once the SETUP has completed there will be a TROUBLE SHOOTING HELP file
in the EnterAct program group. Activate that file for detailed help with
various aspects of the program.
A. Problems running SETUP program.
It is best to exit all other applications before starting any SETUP
installation. If you have a CLOCK program running this may cause some
conflicts with SETUP. If so, exit and restart Windows, then terminate
your CLOCK, then run SETUP again.
The SETUP program itself has certain system requirements: Microsoft
Windows 3.1 in standard or enhanced mode, or Windows-NT, 500K of free
hard-disk space at startup, VGA or better video system. The DOOM II
Saver itself will require additional disk space once the SETUP
installation process begins.
If SETUP will not execute after meeting the above requirements then
review your System Resources. You may need to adjust your Virtual Memory
or other resources. See the Microsoft Window's User's Guide for
additional details on resource management.
